The Equality Act would provide protections for LGBTQIA+ people in our communities

If passed, the Equality Act would update existing civil rights laws to include protections for LGBTQIA+ people.

The Equality Act would prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in areas including employment, housing, credit, education, and more.

29 states currently do not protect LGBTQIA+ people from discrimination

Each state currently sets their own laws on discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and only 21 states have any protections against LGBTQIA+ discrimination.

Senator Jeff Merkley explained "in 29 states, Americans can still be evicted, be thrown out of a restaurant, or be denied a loan because of who they are or whom they love."

The Equality Act would make LGBTQIA+ discrimination illegal in all states and would provide clear guidance to legal systems across the country on how to treat LGBTQIA+ discrimination.

Contacting legislators works

Senators' staff members are required to tally opinions from constituents.

Senators care about their constituents' opinions because their job depends on their constituents reelecting them.

If your senators are already planning to vote the way you want, contacting them provides them with useful data & stories to make their point.
